Numerical Modeling of the Sintering Process - R. Engel, N. Salamon and R. German
R. Engel, N. Salamon and R. German lead this research program which focuses on developing generalized computer models for the simulation of dimensional change during the sintering process cycles. Essential computational technologies are either not at hand or do not exist in a form applicable to sintering of pressed powders. As a result predictive capabilities of final geometry due to shrinkage and mechanical properties are highly dependent upon empirical and experiential knowledge. Testing final parts for dimensional changes and damage (cracking) and then adjusting the processing cycle parameters can be both time-consuming and costly. Ultimately this work will apply to the development of process specification protocols for functionally graded materials, hard materials, coatings and precision components.
