Process Enhancements for Powder Injection Molding for Six Sigma Precision

D. Heaney and R. Zauner (Josh Zucal) are leading this project designed to benchmark and improve the precision of the PIM process. Design of experiments will be used to examine the affect of input process parameters on the dimensional precision produced by the PIM process. Several parameters like powder type and lot, injection molding control and mixing technique will be investigated for the first year of the project. The team has started to characterize the powder and the feedstock and will start making components at an industrial level. These components will be measured and statistically analyzed.

The undergraduate student who would join this team would be engaged in following activities:

• Design an experiment to characterize the part as a function of the injection speed
• Record parameters with the help of different technique and equipment
• Analyze the data with basic statistics
